How did you come up with your name and number?
My derby name is a combination of the initials of my first name AM and my family nickname MO. My number is .50cal, because it is a large round of ammunition.
What made you first start roller derby, or how did you discover roller derby?
I discovered Roller Derby on my 31 st birthday in Santa Cruz. My left skate and I went to Santa Cruz to celebrate my birthday. We indulged in a few adult beverages and struck up a conversation with Bronco a Roller Derby Ref for the Santa Cruz derby team. He explained he just returned from Hawaii, doing a clinic for Roller Derby. I was hooked. A few months later I joined the High Country Hellcats.
Why do you love roller derby so much?
Roller Derby provides me with balance. It is a wonderful stress relief and great workout. It has also been very empowering. I challenge myself every practice to step out of my comfort zone and learn something new.
How many hours per week do you practice?
Three days a week two hours a day.
What is your favorite drill?
Endurance. Cause it hurts.
What is the most challenging part of roller derby?
Time management.
What are your non-derby hobbies?
Traveling and spending time with Family and my Boyfriend Wessssssss.
What’s your favorite piece of your roller derby wardrobe?
Skates, can’t play Roller Derby without them.
How does your derby alter ego differ from your everyday persona?
It doesn’t. I’m the same on the track as I am off.
What is a common misconception about roller derby?
That Roller Derby Girls are mean and rough around the edges. When I tell people I’m on the Roller Derby team, they say “You look to nice to be a Roller Derby Girl.” I always respond with “What’s a Roller Derby Girl look like?”
